Family, Relationship & Individual Counselling | Parenting & Parent-Child Counselling | Couples Counselling
Dr. Max Innes, a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, works with families, couples and individuals to address behavioural, emotional and relational concerns.
Whether I work with an individual, a couple or a family, I work from a family systems perspective to assist those who visit me to address concerns or difficulties that interfere with the way of life they prefer. In other words, I attend to the social systems in which we live, such as family and work, to institutions and their influence on us, as well as to relationships and the personal, internal processes that are an ever-present part of our lives.
We live our lives in social settings in relationship with others. When one member of a family is in distress, everyone is affected. While our thoughts and feelings may seem private and unique, even these inner processes are shaped by social experience and, when they are communicated, have social implications. The family is the most immediate social context for most of us and, consequently, often the most effective therapeutic context. Family members can contribute to the process of change by sharing their thoughts and feelings, by being open to examining their beliefs, by assisting each other to come to agreement about their collective goals, and by supporting each other to live up to whatever proposed changes of behaviour and relationship they agree to.
My goal is to enable those who ask for my help to come to terms with their issues in new ways, so that they are able to change patterns of thought, feeling, behaviour and relationship to overcome whatever is preventing them from living their lives in the ways they choose.
