Sometimes it is helpful to consult with a therapist privately. When you are puzzled or troubled about personal beliefs, values, experiences and behaviour it may be helpful to talk with a psychotherapist without other family members being present.
If you are considering seeing a family therapist for individual psychotherapy it is probably because you are interested in finding out about yourself in relation to others and your social setting.
Note: There is a basic difference in how psychologically-oriented and systemically-oriented therapists think about people and their behaviour. Psychologically-oriented therapists regard the individual, their inner processes and their behaviour as the most important basis for understanding and change. Systemically-oriented therapists, like couples and family therapists, regard relationships between people and factors in the social context just as important for understanding and change as inner processes and behaviour.
